CHAPTER 18

The next morning, my route had me in downtown Shore Haven; which was pretty cool, because everyone had seen me on the news, and wanted to congratulate me.

I felt pretty good. So good, that when I was heading back to Picston at the end of my shift, and saw a woman dressed in a very short pirate costume pulled over by the side of the road, crying her eyes out, I pulled over to see what the problem was. Mattie the hero to the rescue.

“It ran right out in front of me,” she sobbed. “I didn’t have time to stop. I know I hit it, I felt the wheels roll over it. But now I can’t find it, and I’m late for work.” She peered into the deep grass growing along the roadside.

She told me she worked at the Captain’s Club, a lakeside tavern in Webster. That explained the maroon skirt and ruffled panties with the black corset big gold earrings. The four-inch spike heels kept her from stepping off the road; she was afraid she’d ruin her shoes in the mud. I don’t think she realized that with an outfit that skimpy, no one would ever notice her shoes.

“It’s a little black kitten. He should be right here.”

I had no problem wading into the knee-high grass. Usually the groundhogs do a pretty good job of keeping the grass along the roadsides short, but for some reason, the culvert here was overgrown. I used my hands to part the grass. It didn’t’ take me long to find it.

That was no kitten. It was a very small djenie. And it was in very bad shape.

The cocktail waitress gave me a cardboard shoebox from the back of her car to carry the wounded djenie in. I couldn’t just leave it there, I had to do something. The nearest vet clinic was in Shore Haven, so I turned the trike around and headed back.
